WILDWINGS JAGUAR TOUR

19th July – 4th August 2008

SPECIES CHECKLIST

MAMMALS

A total of  39 species recorded.

White-eared Opossum

Didelphys albiventris

Once again this Opossum was found in the hotel garden at Canastra on a quick ‘check’ before dinner, sadly it vanished before anyone else could observe it. Might have had something to do with an Ocelot!

Six-banded (Yellow) Armadillo Dasypus septemcinctus

A brilliant close encounter with one on the first morning at Canastra was followed by another the next afternoon in a different area of the park. A good year for this rather endearing creature.

Giant Anteater   Myrmecophaga tridactyla

Unexpectedly awkward in Canastra on this tour possibly due to the dry conditions. We did however observe eight individuals on the first day and a further five, two reasonably approachable the following day.

In the Pantanal, excellent views of one while spotlighting along the Transpantaneira south of Araras.

Southern Tamandua Tamandua tetradactyla

Perhaps the highlight on the first night’s spotlighting session along the Transpantaneira north of Pixaim. Wonderful views of a strikingly marked individual that actually walked towards the lamp at fairly close range.

At Araras, a fairly sick looking individual was watched bumbling around along the edge of the boardwalk ending up so close we couldn’t actually focus on it.

Our third Tamandua was seen well along the Tranapantaneira to the south of Araras during a spotlighting session, a very dark, rather stunning individual.

Forest (Brazilian) Rabbit   Sylvilagus brasiliensis

2+  Caraca in the vegetable garden

4+ seen on our final night in the Pantanal along the track opposite Araras Ecolodge and the Transpantaneira roadside to the south

Guianan Squirrel

Sciurus aestuans

6+ around the car park at Caraca as normal.

Azara's Agouti  Dasyprocta azarai

Brazilian Guinea-Pig Cavia aperea

Up to three along the boardwalk at Araras on both days.

At least two watched feeding at the source of the Rio Sao Franciso, Canastra NP and at least six animals in the vegetable gardens at Caraca Monastery

Capybara

Hydrochaeris hydrochaeris

Good numbers seen daily in the Pantanal

Ocelot

Felis pardalis

Quite a surprise and a ‘jigsaw puzzle’ of an observation whilst searching for the Opossum in the garden of our hotel in Sao Roque de Minas (Canastra). Sadly, very poor views.

A remarkably large Ocelot initially caused some confusión when caught hunting the river bank whilst spotlighting from the boat on the way back to Porto Jofre after looking for Jaguar.

Our third Ocelot was a beautifully marked but relatively small individual found sitting beside the Transpantaneira south of Araras during the last but one spotlighting session.

Jaguar

Panthera onca

Six sightings involving five cats…

Our first morning on the river was initially relatively quiet but during an hour and a half post eleven o’clock things really ignited with four cats. The first cat, spotted by Dave quickly turned into a pair which although initially elusive and cautious gave superb and prolonged views once they had settled on the riverbank where we observed them at close range for around forty minutes. Whilst looking for this pair as they stalked through the long grass on top of the bank we came across a third cat, a huge male at the water’s edge, close to and obviously aware of the pair moving down the bank. Not surprisingly it  fairly quickly disappeared into the undergrowth. Satiated and happy we began our return back for lunch at Porto Jofre only to find a fourth cat, a rather beautiful, relatively laid back female with a distinctive scar on her left nostril. Another welcome and prolonged encounter followed where she allowed close approach and plenty of camera activity without stirring. Our fifth Jaguar of the day was found whilst spotlighting the river bank on the way back from the afternoon session. Bathed in green light from our unobtrusive filter, this cat just watched us for a while before disappearing back into the shadows. Five cats in a day, utter magic!

Our final encounter was both unusual and exciting. Having spent most of the day looking for Jaguar and drawn a blank, we made a brief ‘toilet’ stop at a sandbank. Having checked the area was safe for the ladies first I walked further to check the ‘mens’ area and found fresh tracks. So fresh in fact they were still wet! Returning to the boat we slowly cruised, following in the direction of the tracks seeing more still and evidence of the animal crossing the river and then more tracks. As we rounded a bend there she was, sat on the bank watching us, the scar nosed female from yesterday, having walked what could well have been ten kilometres overnight. Once again she was remarkably calm and allowed prolonged views from the opposite bank and a couple of very close drift-bys with the boat.

Maned Wolf  Chrysocyon brachyurus

None in Canastra this year, probably due to the rather advanced extremely dry season.

At Caraca however we were not disappointed. Fabulous views of at least two individuals visiting the terrace on and off during the two nights we stayed there. These animals have had some relatively poor press recently due to the fact they are ‘habituated’ animals coming in for food. How anyone can criticize these magnificent animals in this unique, very gothic surround where they choose when and for how long they’ll visit is beyond me.

Crab-eating Fox  Cerdocyon thous

One visted the bar area at Pixaim whilst we were waiting for dinner.

Two along the Transpantaneira north of Pixaim on the first spotlight session.

Six seen along the Transpantaneira on our first evening spotlighting at Araras.

Five along the Transpantaneira and one along the track opposite the lodge on our second evening spotlighting at Araras.

Neotropical River Otter

Lutra longicaudis

Two very brief single animal sightings crossing the Transpantaneira, one north of Pousada Jaguar and one between there and Porto Jofre.

Giant Otter

Pteronura brasiliensis

Two observed on the first boat trip at Pixaim with another pair observed in a different area the following morning.

During our Jaguar forays along the Rio Cuiaba from Porto Jofre, a single followed by two, close, unaware animals on the first day was followed by a group of at least four at a holt on the main river the following afternoon.

Tayra

Eira barbara

One seen by SMA only, in trees close to a group of agitated Brown Howlers near the HQ at Caratinga Reserve.

South American Coati   Nasua nasua

Commonly seen around the main boardwalk at Araras on both days with at least eight individuals present. Also observed twice at night whilst spotlighting the Transpantaneira south of Araras, perhaps another indicator of the unusually hot dry conditions.

Crab-eating Raccoon

Procyon cancrivorous

Nightly counts of six a piece on the two spotlighting sessions at Araras.

Long-nosed (Proboscis) Bat Rhynchonycteris naso

None under the usual bridges this year as they had all been recently repaired and freshly creosoted, not ideal for bats!

Small bats almost certainly this species were seen emerging during a spotlighting session north of Porto Jofre.

Greater Fishing (Bulldog) Bat   Noctilio leporinus

Lesser Fishing (Bulldog) Bat   Noctilio albiventris

Seen along the rivers at Pixaim and Porto Jofre in large numbers and from several bridges while spotlighting along the Transpantaneira.

Also found roosting in a tree at Araras Ecolodge, the same tree with nesting Hyacinth Macaw and Great Horned Owl. A bit of ill judgement as the owl was observed watching them emerge before taking one out of the air and presenting it to a waiting female! Also  watched as they took insects from the ground along the verandah at Araras and Pixaim.

Seen along the rivers at Pixaim and Porto Jofre in much smaller numbers than the Greater. It does appear that this species emerges later in the evening. Some excellent views of both species side by side whilst spotlighting the Rio Cuiaba.

Black Myotis

Myotis nigricans

There is a sizeable roost with several small clusters in the roof of the chapel at Caraca and small numbers could be seen around the terrace on both evenings.

Seba’s Short-tailed (Fruit) Bat  Carollia perspicillata

15+ roosting in a disused building at the IBAMA research station along Santa Isabel Road

Pallas’ Mastiff Bat

Molossus molossus

Roosting in the accomodation roof at Porto Jofre, identified from photographs.

Black-tailed Marmoset

Callithrix melanura

Although allegedly due to be split as a separate species we will treat the marmosets seen in the Pantanal as Black-tailed Marmoset in line with Groves ‘Primate Taxonomy’ for the time-being.

Two groups along the boardwalk at Araras Lodge

Buffy-headed Marmoset  Callithrix flaviceps

8+ along the river near Caratinga, unusually difficult this year

Geoffroy’s Marmoset

Callithrix geoffroyi

10+ Sitia Graciema

Black-tufted Marmoset  Callithrix penicillata

A double encounter with the habituated group (18 individuals) by the riverbank in our hotel garden at Sao Roque de Minas (Canastra) was great for all involved.

A group of at least 10 individuals at a marshy area between Canastra and Caraca.

Another group of at least 10 individuals with Masked Titi Monkey on the Tanque Grande Trail at Caraca

Black-striped Capuchin Cebus libidinosus

Two+ groups along the river whilst searching for Jaguar from Porto Jofre.

Several groups observed, some at close range along the boardwalk during our stay at Araras Ecolodge

Black Capuchin

Cebus nigritus

Three large groups (10+)  observed at close range in Caratinga this year.

Masked Titi (Monkey) Callicebus personatus

Superb, very close and prolonged views along the Tanque Grande trail this year.

Northern Muriqui  Brachyteles hypoxanthus

Fabulous prolonged views of a large group (35+) of mostly males with a single female and newborn very close to the research headquarters. Who could forget the ‘hanging-grape’ illusion – how many monkeys?

Black (and Gold) Howler Monkey  Alouatta caraya

Two roadside groups of three  between the park entrance and Pixaim on our first morning in the Pantanal.

Two from the boat at Porto Jofre.

3+ Santa Isabel Road.

Daily counts of six and seven along the boardwalk at Araras.

Brown Howler Monkey  Aloatta guariba

Three groups totalling fifteen individuals at Caratinga Reserve

Pampas Deer  Ozotoceros bezoarticus

Two single Stags observed in Canastra NP

Red Brocket

Mazama americana

Red Brocket were fairly regularly encountered during spotlighting sessions at Porto Jofre, Pixaim and particularly Araras Ecolodge and the nearby Transpantaneira.

Gray Brocket

Mazama gouazoubira

One along the track opposite Araras Ecolodge on the first Araras night drive.

Marsh Deer  Blastocerus dichotomous

Seen along the Transpantaneira from Araras to Porto Jofre on all bar one day. A total of 11 seen, 7 during the day and 4 at night.

Daily counts of 5 and 3 from the Tower Hide at Araras.

Brazilian Tapir

Tapirus terrestris

Five on this tour.

One north of Pixaim on the first night spotlighting in the Pantanal.

One south of Araras on the first nights spotlighting session was followed by an excellent trio the following night.

Ferals

Water Buffalo

Bubalis bubalis

A few in the Pantanal particularly along the main river from Porto Jofre

Feral Pig

Sus domesticus

Seen several times along the Transpantaneira but surprisingly no sign of feral Wild Boar this year.

Near misses / Unidentified species

Puma

Felis concolor

Still eluding us but fresh tracks were found again at Araras. One of the guides saw two animals together early in the morning whilst fetching the horses whilst we were there, we’re getting closer!

Peccary  sp

Tayassu sp

Striped Hog-nosed Skunk

Conepatus semistriatus

It seems we just missed a large group of Peccary on the Transpantaneira south of Jaguar Ecolodge, we could still smell them

The Skunk was again visiting the terrace during our visit, unfortunately in the early hours of the morning this year, couldn’t miss that familiar aroma though!
