This former colonial home perches high in a forested valley, its world famous veranda overlooks many bird feeders, alive with tropical gems all day long.
The day starts for many guests, with early morning coffee and biscuits on the veranda at dawn with hummingbirds sipping sugar solution from the feeder inches from your face. Photographers often spend the day just here, the brilliant honeycreepers and tanagers being a prime target too.
Enjoy walks deep in the magnificent forest, rest silently on the trails and see what comes by. If you are lucky you will find an ant colony on the move with its attendant special birds. Sit by waterfalls, listen to the bellbirds, look out for trogons and toucans. See the strange but stunning Oilbird* in the estate’s colony, after a guided walk down a bird-rich forested valley. Watch eagles feed their chicks on their giant nest, and mixed species flocks gorging on fruiting trees. Night walks, led by the centre’s excellent naturalist guides, are interesting and sometimes yields owls, you should also see Tarantulas on the walls of the approach road. You will always remember the displaying male White-bearded Manakins at their lek.
Guided birdwatching excursions to other parts of the island will be available during your stay, led by the centre's staff and guides. A short illustrated talk is often given in the lounge after dinner. Food is good and generally local in character, served in the airy dining room. Comfortable lounge areas to relax and talk to fellow guests feature afternoon tea with cakes baked on the premises. A small gift shop can be found at the reception desk, which also sells bird and natural history books.
Rooms are comfortable, with ceiling fans and private facilities, either in the main centre or a short walk away in the grounds. We recommend at least a two or three night stay. You will of course visit the centre briefly during the Pax Guest House birding package. WildWings can offer tailor-made holidays featuring Asa Wright for individuals and groups. Just contact us to discuss your requirements. The Centre is very popular with the North American market; early booking is strongly advised, especially for the period December to April.
A major attraction of Spring Hill Estate, the former name of what is now the Asa Wright Nature Centre, is the small breeding colony of the nocturnal Oilbird. Located in Dunston Cave, a beautiful riparian grotto on the property, this is one of the few easily accessible colonies known of this remarkable species. (* Guests staying a minimum of a 3 nights qualify for a complimentary visit. Note Oilbird excursions are not daily, check with reception on arrival for the latest information).
You will find the days pass very quickly deep in the estate’s forests, another special place you will want to return to some day.

About Asa Wright Rooms: 24. 2 on the ground floor of the main building (suitable for the disabled and honeymooners only) whilst the majority of the rooms are in units in the gardens and grounds close by. All rooms have private facilities and ceiling fan. No lift, steps, garden steep in places, stairs inside. Facilities: Waterfall fed, freshwater rock pool in grounds, terrace and veranda, lounge, library, dining room, gardens with bird feeders, paths straight into primary rainforest. afternoon teas and bar service with international snacks available (eg burgers etc), gifts & books available to purchase.
Meals: Local/international, mainly buffet style. Much of the produce is estate grown including the coffee. Packed lunch provided if out for the day. For birders: Bird books, superb birding guides and excursions with transport available locally (subject to availability). |
