WildOceans - Sri Lanka Trinco Blue Whales
WildOceans are delighted to offer these excellent holidays run by our good friends Chas and Sue Anderson, well known for putting Maldives, then Seychelles and now Sri Lanka on the map in cetacean terms.
Sri Lanka is arguably the best place in the world to see Blue Whales, but has very much more to offer as well. Chas predicted and discovered the now popular Blue Whale hotspot off the south coast of the island, so you will be travelling with the expert.
In addition, our small groups and exclusive-use boats mean more time on the water (typically twice as long as most other operators) and uncrowded views of the whales and dolphins that we encounter. Add looking for Leopards and Wild Elephants, plus other mammals, lots of birds, butterflies and dragonflies, and you have the recipe for a superb natural history holiday.
As in previous years, there are two itineraries on offer for 2014 & 2015, Trinco Blues or Blues, Leopards and Elephants (see separate page)
Trinco Blue Whales
In the early 1980s, a good population of Blue Whales was discovered off the NE coast of Sri Lanka, near the coastal city of Trincomalee. Now the area is accessible again, and our trips in 2010, 2011 and 2012 all found good numbers of Blues, just minutes from the beach in front of our hotel, the 4* Chaaya Blu.
We plan six mornings out on the water, in our own chartered 20-foot launches, which both have quite engines and sun covers (but no loo). We will head out early each morning, when the sea is at its calmest, sometimes taking a packed breakfast with us. Other species seen here include Sperm and Bryde’s Whales, Longman’s Beaked Whale, Spinner, Bottlenose, Risso’s, Spotted, Striped and Indo-pacific Bottlenose Dolphins. Our hotel is right on the beach, with rooms overlooking the sea, a pool and several dining options. If you are looking for a trip dedicated to giving you close encounters with the largest animal of all, look no further!
The 15th of March departure will only have three participants per whale-watching boat (rather than four), making this trip ideal for underwater photography.
Arrive Sri Lanka, and transfer to nearby hotel. Remainder of day at leisure. Meet for pre-dinner drinks.
Drive east to Trincomalee, possibly seeing wild Elephants along the way. Check in to 4* Chaaya Blu Hotel, right on the beach, our home for the coming week. Sunset drinks overlooking the ocean.
Six days of whale watching. Afternoon optional excursions or at leisure.
We head back west. Overnight at 2* hotel near airport.
Transfer to airport for flights home.
Please note: All itineraries are subject to weather, local conditions and final approval by the relevant authorities.
