West Papua Birds of Paradise Cruise NEW!
AT A GLANCE
Bird Cruise: Birds, dolphins, tropical islands & forests
Weda (Ternate) – Cruise (whole vessel charter) - Sorong
10sp of Birds of Paradise possible incl Wilson’s & Wallace’s Standard-wing, other endemics and restricted range species.
Tropical, warm to hot.
12 passenger comfortable liveaboard vessel, all cabins with private facilities and air-conditioning.
The almost mythical Birds-of-Paradise are found throughout the New Guinea region and on the remote islands of Waigeo and Batanta, off the coast of West Papua arguably the most spectacular of all of them can be seen, the extraordinary Wilson’s Bird of Paradise. Further west on the island of Halmahera, the equally amazing Wallace’s Standardwing occurs and we hope to see both these incredible birds on this special itinerary.
Other BoPs on our potential list include Red, King, Lesser, Magnificent and Twelve-wired Birds-of-Paradise, Glossy-mantled & Trumpet Manucode, Paradise Crow, plus Magnificent Riflebird!
Further avian highlights could include Orange-bellied Fruit-dove, Pink-spotted Fruit-dove, Western Crowned Pigeon, Palm Cockatoo, Kofiau Paradise Kingfisher, Blue-black Kingfisher, Yellow-billed Kingfisher, Papuan Pitta, Ivory-breasted Pitta, Kofiau Monarch, Golden Monarch and Raja Ampat Pitohui.
Join us for this unique 12 night tour which starts on Halmahera (North Malukus) with a pre-cruise stay at the world-famous Weda Resort, followed by our week long cruise and then a post cruise stay and some final birding around Sorong. Subject to demand, we may offer a post-tour extension to the Arfak Mountains for more BoPs and goodies.
Our cruise will be aboard the 38 metre long Katharina, built in 1995 and extensively refurbished in 2014. We will take a maximum of 12 people plus Chris Collins and local guides throughout. Cabins are either double or twin (upper and lower berths) with private facilities and have air-conditioning. The vessel looks extremely comfortable, has a saloon and bar area, two sundecks and a covered outdoor dining area. There will be some opportunities for fantastic snorkelling for those who wish.
Ashore, especially in forest habit, we may break the party into two smaller groups (or more) of six plus guides, to maximise each participant’s experience. (Note we do not allow flash photography of birds and wildlife, or give photographers any special preferences, this is primarily a ‘watching’ holiday!)
