Mammal and birds tour with the emphasis on the more difficult to see mammals and endemic birds.
Sri Lanka, Colombo – Colombo (see itinerary)
Target mammals include Fishing, Rusty-spotted and Jungle Cats, Leopard, Sloth Bear, Golden Palm Civet, Grey and Red Slender Loris, Purple-faced Leaf Monkey and Indian Pangolin along with a range of commoner endemic and more widespread mammals.
Target birds include endemics such as Chestnut-backed Owlet, Sri Lankan Blue Magpie, Sri Lankan Blue Magpie, Sri Lankan Whistling Thrush and many other species.
From warm at night to hot and humid during the day with the chance of isolated thunderstorms.
Lodges and chalets with private facilities, travel in minibuses, 4x4 jeeps and boats (extension only).
This exciting new small tour will visit many of Sri Lanka’s best areas for wildlife including some not visited by other tour companies. The focus will be on some of Sri Lanka’s exciting cats and endemic mammals and we will have several long spotlighting drives to help us find species such as Fishing and Rusty-spotted Cats, Golden Palm Civet and Grey and Red Slender Loris. We also expect to find many commoner mammals including good numbers of Asian Elephants. Although this is primarily a mammal tour we will also try to see a several of Sri Lanka’s endemic birds.
The main tour will visit a number of localities during the tour including Anawilunawa RAMSAR Sanctuary, Anamaduwa, Minneriya or Kaudulla National Parks, Sigiriya, Kandy, Hakgala Botanical Gardens, Horton Plains National Park, Kataragama, Lunugamvehera National Park, Udalwalawe National Park and Kanneliya Rainforest.
Day 1 Fly to Colombo,
Early morning arrival Colombo. Transfer to Kanneliya. Late afternoon and evening spotlighting walks at Kanneliya. Night Senaro Holiday Resort.
Day 3 Morning drive to Udawalawe via Weeraketiya. Lunch in hotel at Udawalawe. Late afternoon visit to Udawalawe NP and spotlighting session near hotel.
Day 4 Transfer to Kataragama. Afternoon visit to Lunugamvehera National Park. Long spotlighting session along Kataragama to Buttala road. Night Kataragama.
Day 5 Morning relaxing around hotel. Afternoon drive in Lunugamvehera National Park. Spotlighting session again along Kataragama to Buttala road or Kataragama to Bundala road. Night Kataragama.
Day 6 Morning drive in Lunugamvehera National Park. Late morning/afternoon transfer to Nuwara Eliya. Late afternoon visit to Hakgala Botanical Gardens.
Day 7 Morning optional walk in Horton Plains NP. Afternoon drive to Kandy. Evening spotlighting in grounds of hotel. Night Kandy
Day Morning drive to Sigiriya. Afternoon birding at Sigiriya. Long spotlighting session around Sigiriya. Night Sigiriya.
Day 9 Morning lie in. Afternoon jeep safari in Minneriya or Kaudulla National Park depending on the Location of the Elephants. Long spotlighting session around Sigiriya. Night Sigiriya.
Day 10 Morning lie in. Afternoon walks looking for Purple-faced Leaf Monkeys, mongooses, bats and squirrels. Long spotlighting session around Sigiriya. Night Sigiriya.
Day 11 Morning drive to Nikaweratiya. Afternoon birding in bay. Evening spotlighting at Anamaduwa. If we still need Fishing or Rusty-spotted Cat we may continue right through to first light. Night Nikaweratiya.
Day 12 Morning lie in and then head back to Colombo with afternoon visit to Chilaw spit and Anawilundawa RAMSAR Sanctuary for birding. Night Katunayake.
Day 13 Morning flight back to the UK.
