WILDWINGS JAGUAR TOUR: 29th August Ð 14th September 2009

SPECIES CHECKLIST

MAMMALS

Total species 34 excluding feral Cape Buffalo & Pigs, unidentified rodents and bats.

Southern Tamandua

Tamandua tetradactyla

A quite strikingly marked individual was found close to the road whilst spotlighting south of Araras on the final spotlighting session giving good views.

Giant Anteater Myrmecophaga tridactyla

Some excellent encounters including a couple of very close individuals in        Canastra on both days of our visit to this wonderful area with quite a high tally.        There were upto 18 individuals on the first day followed by a further five        following afternoon.

¤              In the Pantanal one was seen while spotlighting along the Transpantaneira south of Araras.

Forest (Brazilian) Rabbit  Sylvilagus brasiliensis

¤              Two around the Monastery at Caraca Ð surprisingly no Brazilian Cavies were seen on this trip.

¤              2 followed by a further 6+ seen on our final nights in the Pantanal along the track opposite Araras Ecolodge.

Guianan Squirrel

Sciurus aestuans

6+ around the carpark at Caraca as normal.

Azara's Agouti Dasyprocta azarai

¤              One near Hotel Porto Jofre.

¤              Up to three along the boardwalk at Araras on both days.

Capybara

Hydrochaeris hydrochaeris

Good numbers seen daily in the Pantanal

Ocelot

Felis pardalis

Good albeit short views of one at close range along the Transpantaneira south of Araras on our last night at Araras and in the Pantanal. Unusually difficult this year despite long sessions looking.

Jaguar

Panthera onca

A superb and rather large male ÔwilsonÕ named by reserarchers due to the rather distinct ÔwÕ pattern on his forehead was the star of the show this year. Found at the Ôthree brothersÕ area on our first morning, literally only a couple of hours after setting off, we watched this magnificent cat at close range for around forty five minutes before continuing on. During the next two days we managed to bump into/relocate the same Jaguar, ÔwilsonÕ seven times! Each time he had moved and was either dozing which he seemed to like doing 9though he had crossed several frivers with a decent current) or watching the observers watching him. Some fabulous encounters with no doubt, many images in the databank! A good year for Jaguar.

Maned Wolf Chrysocyon brachyurus

Two Wolves individually visited the terrace at Caraca Monastery during both nights of our stay in this wonderful area. Unlike some previous visits, the first animal came in very early and continued to visit on a regular basis allowing incredibly close observation and experience. Some enjoyed further, more personal , perhaps individual encounters when most of the other monastery visitors had retired to bed.

Crab-eating Fox Cerdocyon thous

¤              Two were seen on the first night spotlighting in the Pantanal north of the Beiro Rio and our base at Pixaim.

¤              Two were seen on the first night spotlighting along the Transpantaneira south of Araras with a further four animals the following night. A low number this year perhaps due to the generally dry conditions.

Neotropical River Otter

Lutra longicaudis

One was seen briefly actually crossing the Transpantaneira north of Pousada Jaguar.

Giant Otter

Pteronura brasiliensis

At least three individuals gave relatively good views, some swimming close to the boat on both the late afternoon, early evening boat trips from the Beira Rio in Pixaim.

Tayra

Eira barbara

One was seen well, though briefly during the daytime when we waited quietly from the truck in Araras having heard movement in the dry forest leaf litter.

South American Coati Nasua nasua

¤              Around twenty individuals crossed the Transpantaneira in front of the vehicle just south of Araras on our first morning in the area.

¤              At Araras, in the boardwalk area there were at least eight individuals on the first day and up to fifteen on the second day, offering some close views of this rather endearing and curious beast.

Crab-eating Raccoon

Procyon cancrivorous

Surprisingly, none were seen in the Pixaim area this year probably due to the exceptionally dry conditions. A trio and then four were seen during the two nights spotlighting sessions around Araras.

Lessser Fishing (Bulldog) Bat Noctilio leporinus

Observed at both Pixaim on the evening session and at Porto Jofre when returning early evening, at the alter site, often intermixed with the following species. Also found roosting in a hollow tree at Araras.

Greater Fishing (Bulldog) Bat Noctilio leporinus

¤              Seen along the rivers at Pixaim and Porto Jofre in large numbers and from several bridges while spotlighting along the Transpantaneira.

¤              Also found roosting in a tree at Araras Ecolodge and watched as they took insects from the ground along the verandah at Araras and Pixaim.

Black Myotis

Myotis nigricans

A sizeable roost with several small clusters in the roof of the chapel at Caraca. Bats coming out from roost early evening on both nights and feeding around the terrace were probably this species

(Seba's) Short-tailed Fruit Bat Carollia perspicillata

Around twenty individuals roosting in a disused building at the IBAMA research station along Santa Isabel Road

Black-tailed Marmoset
Callithrix melanura

¤              Although allegedly due to be split as a separate species we will treat the marmosets seen in the Pantanal as Black-tailed Marmoset in line with Groves Primate Taxonomy for the time-being.

¤              3+ along the Transpantaneira south of Pousada Jaguar.

¤              Two groups along a trail at Araras Ecolodge.

Buffy-headed Marmoset Callithrix flaviceps

10+ along the river near Caratinga, unusually difficult to get good views of this year though with several new twins in toe perhaps no surprise.

Geoffroy's Marmoset

Callithrix geoffroyi

We couldnÕt visit Situ Graciema this year due to family illness but at least six were obsered at Caraca including some obvious hybrid geoffroyi/penicillata

Black-tufted Marmoset Callithrix penicillata

¤              When you are specifically looking for these, they seem to be extremely awakward, when you are not, they just appear!

¤              At least six were seen in the lower part of Canastra NP and another group of at least eight venid the churruscaria when we stopped for lunch whilst travelling back to Belo Horizonte.

Black-striped Capuchin Cebus libidinosus

Good numbers this year with some close observations. At least four from the boat whilst looking for Jaguar out of Porto Jofre. Two groups observed along the boardwalk, nature trail area at Araras.

Black Capuchin

Cebus nigritus

2+ Caratinga

Masked Titi (Monkey) Callicebus personatus

Two groups observed in the lower part of Canastra NP with some very close observations as the animals passed overhead.

Excellent views along the Tanque Grande trail and the Waterfall trail at Caraca with at least eight animals seen very well.

Northern Muriqui Brachyteles hypoxanthus

At least 25 animals observed at close range in Caratinga reserve with a healthy number of youngsters, the future looks bright.

Black (and Gold) Howler Monkey Alouatta caraya

Groups were seen at Pixaim from the boat, along the Cuiaba river from Porto Jofre, along the Transpantaneira and around the boardwalk area at Araras. One individual that had been wounded having some hands-on physio from one of the group!

Brown Howler Monkey Aloatta guariba

Four groups observed at Caratinga

Pampas Deer Ozotoceros bezoarticus

This is now an endangered species in Canastra so we were pleasantly surprised to find at least three males, a female with young on day one and another female the following day.

Red Brocket

Mazama americana

¤              Two seen while spotlighting north of Pixaim.

¤              One seen just north of Porto Jofre whilst spotlighting.

¤              One seen while spotlighting south of Araras.

Gray Brocket

Mazama gouazoubira

¤              One while spotlighting along Transpantaneira north of Pixaim

¤              One close to the track opposite Araras Ecolodge on the second day.

Marsh Deer Blastocerus dichotomous

Seen along the Transpantaneira from just north Araras to Porto Jofre on all bar one day.

Brazilian Tapir

Tapirus terrestris

Great views of two along the Transpantaneira on the last nights spotlighting south of Araras.

Ferals

Water Buffalo

Syncerus caffer
